Kanye West's tour insurer claim 'marijuana caused his mental breakdown'

Kanye West is currently embroiled in a bitter legal battle with the company who insured his 2016 Saint Pablo tour, suing Lloyd’s of London after they refused to pay him when he was forced to cancel his November shows last year.

The rapper suffered a highly publicised mental breakdown just weeks after his wife, Kim Kardashian, was robbed at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room, however, his insurance are not paying out.

In legal documents that have obtained by The Sun, Lloyd’s have suggested that marijuana caused Kanye’s mental health issues, which invalidates his insurance claim.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kanye first filed a loss claim days after he cancelled 21 dates of his tour, but both he and his company, Very Good Touring Inc. are yet to be paid, eight months later.

Writing in the legal papers, Kanye’s company say that insurers haven’t paid and are “implying that Kanye’s use of marijuana may provide them with the basis to deny the claim”.

Kanye’s physician previously provided the insurance company with sworn testimony that the rapper was unable to take to the stage, with the star also submitting to an independent medical examination with a doctor selected by the insurance company, who also deemed him unfit to perform.

Kanye’s lawyers have warned other musicians not to hire Lloyd’s of London off the back of their case, with lawyer Howard King writing: “Performing artists who pay handsomely to insurance companies within the Lloyd’s of London marketplace to obtain show tour ‘non-appearance or cancellation’ insurance should take note of the lesson to be learned from this lawsuit: Lloyd’s companies enjoy collecting bounteous premiums; they don’t enjoy paying claims, no matter how legitimate.

“Their business model thrives on conducting unending ‘investigations’, of bona fide coverage requests, stalling interminably, running up their insured’s costs, and avoiding coverage decisions based on flimsy excuses.

“The artists think they’re buying peace of mind. The insurers know they’re just selling a ticket to the courthouse.”
