BCS Standings Week 5: SEC on the outside looking in

BCS rankings

For the first time since Oct. 17, 2010, an SEC team in not in the top two of the BCS standings.

After Alabama's stunning loss to Texas A&M, the Crimson Tide, which had held the No. 1 spot since the BCS standings were released five weeks ago, dropped to No. 4 clearing the way for Kansas State to slip into the No. 1 spot, followed by Oregon and Notre Dame.

Yep, with three weeks remaining in the season, it looks like an SEC team will not play in the BCS National Championship for the first time since 2005.

And that's astounding considering for the first-time ever, there are six SEC teams ranked in the top nine of the BCS standings — No. 4 Alabama, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Florida, No. 7 LSU, No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 9 South Carolina.

[Also: With Oregon at No. 1, Chip Kelly can call his shot in the NFL]

But let's not jump the gun. Both Kansas State and Oregon have tough games remaining and could easily suffer the same fate as Alabama. And that's what Notre Dame is hoping because that's the only way the Irish are getting into national championship game. If Kansas State and Oregon stay undefeated, neither is going to move from their current spots in the human polls (Oregon No. 1 and Kansas State No. 2). It doesn't matter that Notre Dame is the top team according to the computers.

Even if Kansas State and Oregon stay undefeated, there could be some jockeying between No. 1 and No. 2. Oregon has significantly closed the gap between it and the Wildcats in the BCS standings and the Ducks will only continue to do so with games against No. 13 Stanford and No. 16 Oregon State. Kansas State still has to play No. 15 Texas.

So, as we note every week, this thing is far from over, but it's going to be an exciting finish.
