Mom’s custom menu system ignites controversy among parents on TikTok: ‘This is ridiculous’

A mom’s weekly menu system is going viral on TikTok — and parents can’t agree on whether it’s brilliant or over-the-top.

Mom and TikToker @buggys.country.kitchen quickly gained nearly 300,000 views, 17,000 likes and 700 comments when she shared how she provides her kids with options for mealtime.

As every parent knows, feeding little ones is no easy feat — like this mother who had to resort to giving her toddler homemade “mouse juice” when a dinnertime meltdown ensued.

And while some TikTokers feel this mom might have just made mealtime a breeze, others say her system is totally ridiculous. Now the whole topic is causing a huge controversy in the comment section.

As she explains in her now-viral video, @buggys.country.kitchen provides her kids with a menu for every day of the week. But each menu is custom-made for each child, featuring only the items they individually prefer.

A sample menu includes such options as:

Breakfast

  • French toast or cereal, hot or cold

    • Hot options: cream of wheat, regular oatmeal or chocolate oatmeal

  • Drink: milk or juice

Lunch

  • Sandwich: grilled or cold (with fruit)

    • Sandwich options: cheese, cheese and meat, or PB&J

  • Drink: milk, soda or juice

Dinner

  • Tater tot casserole, cold sandwich or grilled cheese

  • Veggies: corn, green beans, peas, carrots or no veggie

  • Drink: milk or juice

  • Dessert: ice cream, cookie or muffin

Tinashe is calling the shots:

Each child makes their selections one week in advance, giving @buggys.country.kitchen time to prepare the meals ahead of time.

At the end of the month, @buggys.country.kitchen starts all over by putting together the next month’s stack of menus.

As @buggys.country.kitchen explains, providing her kids with these options prevents food waste, as the kids are served only the items they will definitely eat.

Some TikTok parents thought her custom menu idea was brilliant.

“Great idea! Good job momma! Let them have healthy relationships with food!” one user wrote in the comments.

“This is so smart, less waste, more choices at an age that you don’t always feel like you get to make choices! I will be adapting this!!!!” another user wrote.

“Love this. My mom did the ‘you eat what I fix, or fix yourself something’ if we didn’t like what she fixed. Led to food anxiety when trying something [new],” commented another user.

Other TikTokers felt the individualized menus were too much.

“What happened to eating what is put in front of them?” one user wrote.

“My kids eat what I serve. I’m not running a restaurant,” commented another user.

“This is ridiculous. I am making 1 meal and 1 meal only. Take it or leave it. I am not being a short order cook,” wrote another user.

Thankfully, each family can serve their kids in the manner that works best for them. At the end of the day, so long as children are well fed and develop healthy relationships with food, that’s all that truly matters.
