House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hit back at President Trump, warning him that he will have no choice but to leave office if American voters send him packing in November.
“The fact is: Whether he knows it yet or not, he will be leaving,” the powerful Democratic leader warned Trump.
Pelosi was responding to Trump’s explosive suggestion on Sunday that he would have to wait and see how the vote goes before committing to accepting the results.
Trump, who is trailing badly in polls, has been raging for weeks about the potential for vote-rigging with absentee ballots, which are expected to be used by millions of Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic.
But there is scant evidence of fraud, and Republicans have successfully spearheaded the use of mailed ballots for years.
Some Democrats fear Trump will seek to overturn the results of the November election if he loses, perhaps by ordering an early end to counting of absentee ballots from Democratic strongholds received after Election Day.
Democrat Joe Biden leads Trump by a gaping 10% margin in recent surveys and the president’s approval ratings have been plunging amid widespread dissatisfaction with his handling of the coronavirus crisis.
