Obama to speak on police reform today as George Floyd protests continue. How to watch

Former President Barack Obama will speak on police violence Wednesday as protests continue across the U.S.

The My Brother’s Keep Alliance is hosting a live town hall, “Reimagining Policing in the Wake of Continued Police Violence,” with Obama and several panelists, including former Attorney General Eric Holder.

Those who want to watch can tune in at 5 p.m. ET on the Obama Foundation’s YouTube channel or on its website.

The MBK Alliance, part of the Obama Foundation, was started by the former president in 2014 to address the opportunity gaps faced by young men and boys of color.

Wednesday’s event will be part of its town hall series.

It comes as protests over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died while being pinned by a Minneapolis police officer last week, continue in cities across the country.

Obama wrote an op-ed featured in Medium earlier this week about the protests, Floyd’s death, racial bias in the criminal justice system and how to incite change.

He stressed the importance of protesting coupled with political participation — especially at the local level.

“So the bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics,” he wrote. “We have to do both. We have to mobilize to raise awareness, and we have to organize and cast our ballots to make sure that we elect candidates who will act on reform.”
