Throughout Netflix’s newest series Tiger King, many players clearly emerge as essential to the story of Joe Exotic and his chaotic life. Although the show focuses primarily on his professional career, his personal life feels like it's got enough drama to potentially fuel an entirely separate show.
Although the series explicitly depicts Exotic’s sexuality and his multiple relationships, there’s one person who comes up short in the equation. During Exotic’s marriage to Travis Maldonado, he was also unofficially wed to John Finlay, the one-time president of the zoo. Fans have wondered what happened to him since the show wrapped, and the answer is surprising.

Who is John Finlay in relation to Joe Exotic?
A Texas native, he joined Exotic’s zoo in 2003 when he was 19, where a relationship between the two blossomed shortly thereafter. According to a 2019 Texas Monthly profile, that same year, the couple entered a throuple relationship when Maldonado entered the picture. And according to New York Magazine, at one point, there was a fourth member named Paul in the relationship.
What led to John Finlay and Joe Exotic's relationship falling apart?
While working as the President of the zoo, Finlay was accused of domestic abuse, along with abusing other park employees, leading to his leaving the position in 2013. Around the same time, Finlay said that Exotic was “manipulative and controlling,” according to Texas Monthly. It all fell apart the next year, when the two entered into an alleged physical altercation in the middle of the park.
One surprising fact about Finlay? It turns out that he slept with a number of the women working in the park, and he eventually left the zoo for good after getting one of the women pregnant. He still cared for Exotic after their break-up, as Finlay was there to comfort him after Maldonado committed suicide.
Where is John Finlay now?
Since leaving the park, he has moved around a lot, and according to Texas Monthly, he was last living in a motel off the I-35. It looks like he also found happiness, as his personal Facebook page shows a photo from May 2019 with his new partner, Stormey Sanders.
Finlay also seems to have set up a fan page on the social media platform for TV-goers to learn his truth about what happened on the series. And lo and behold—he also had his teeth fixed. Finlay that Netflix producers knew that he had done this, but they chose not to show it with some ulterior motives in mind.
"Yes, I have my teeth fixed," he wrote on the fanpage. "The producers of the Netflix series had video and pictures of this, but chose not to show it. It's all about the ratings for them, not the people they hurt."
