EastEnders: All of the big shocks from episode two of 'Disaster Week'

BBC bosses have been teasing that this week in EastEnders will “change the Square” for good, dubbing it “Disaster Week” with the promise that a series of revelations, and a shock gas explosion, will provide viewers with must-see scenes that will redeem the soap following a difficult few months of lack-lustre storylines.

Monday night’s episode of the show left fans disappointed to say the least, with many criticising it on social media for not showing the explosion until the very end, with the rest being “boring” filler.

However, last night’s [5th September] 30-minute episode was anything but “boring”, and viewers were overwhelmed with the amount of shock twists and turns that took place in Albert Square.

Here’s a recap of the biggest surprises from episode two of ‘EastEnders: Disaster Week’:

1. Steven Murders Jane?

After Jane discovered that Steven was not only lying about his deadly brain tumour but also having an affair with his girlfriend Lauren’s sister, Abi, last week, we knew that there was trouble ahead, however, we were not prepared for just how brutal the scenes would be.

With puppetmaster Max telling Steven that Jane wants him dead, he orders the troubled Beale boy to kill her as she sat alone and exhausted in the family restaurant, helplessly waiting for Ian to bring her wheelchair.

Steven cruelly allowed Jane to believe that he was going to help her but she was quickly forced to beg for her life as he doused her in alcohol and lit a match – is this really the end of Jane Beale?

With Steven Beale actor Aaron Sidwell set to leave the soap in the very near future, fans have speculated that Steven will have a change of heart and run back to save Jane, dying himself in the process.

Well, that’d certainly solve the problem of what to do about his fake terminal cancer.

2. Ted Shoots Mystery Walford Resident

It’s not just Jane whose life was hanging in the balance after yesterday’s episode, with newbie Ted earning his stripes in the soap by becoming paranoid by the gas explosion and shooting a mystery neighbour as the famous ‘doof doofs’ began.

There appears to be somebody after elderly couple Ted and Joyce and after their home was recently broken into, Ted’s paranoia had gone into overdrive.

With many residents vowing to go and check on the pair throughout the episode, fans have speculated that it was Johnny Carter who took the bullet, with the actor previously being spotted filming scenes alongside his onscreen mum, Linda, in an ambulance.

3. Linda’s Secret Revealed

Speaking of Linda Carter, she was also responsible for one of last night’s big shocks as she finally revealed what her very mysterious secret is to Jack Branning.

Linda had spent seven months away from her family under the guise that she was looking after her sick mother, however, last month fans learned that her mum was actually in good health as the Carter matriarch admitted that she “hadn’t told Mick”.

Questioned by Mick’s best friend Jack about where she has been for the best part of the year, Linda confessed that she wasn’t looking after her mother but that she had been battling cancer herself.

No more information was given, but we’re sure that it’ll all come spilling out later this week.

4. Bex and Mr. Pryce Kiss

As if that wasn’t enough drama for half an hour, EastEnders’ fans were left stunned when 16-year-old Bex smooched her music teacher, Mr. Pryce, as she nursed him back to health after the gas explosion.

Much to viewers’ outrage, seemingly “nice guy” Gethin Pryce kissed the teen back, paving the way for a disturbing grooming storyline.

And with Bex’s mum, Sonia, also pursuing Mr. Pryce we have a feeling that this plot is going to get incredibly messy.

Needless to say, fans had a lot to discuss after the episode aired, taking to social media to share their reactions:

EastEnders continues tomorrow night at 7.30pm, and we can’t wait to see what is in store.
