Eyes Closed, Ears Covered: EastEnders' favourite stars in harrowing must-see thriller

It’s not every day that you see a piece of live theatre that not only blows you away but sticks with you long after the curtain call.

In fact, with the sheer amount of productions performing in London on any given night, you’d be forgiven for assuming that the saturated market would only see a decrease in quality of shows across the capital.

However, three-hander ‘Eyes Closed, Ears Covered’, performing at the charming yet understated Bunker Theatre, has raised the bar in a seriously big way.

With former EastEnders’ favourite Danny-Boy Hatchard and Joe Idris-Roberts playing best friends Aaron and Sebastian, ‘Eyes Closed’ is a hard-hitting and emotional play that will leave you with a lump in your throat and goosebumps all over your body in a gripping, 100-minute spectacular.

Boasting minimal props and the most basic of set designs, the show opens with Aaron being questioned about the day’s events by the police force, with the teen recounting his and Seb’s seemingly innocent trip to Brighton in the most tantalising of manners.

The audience are left to piece together exactly what happened on the fateful day, with patrons being hooked from the opening scene as they all turn detective in a bid to guess what exactly is going on.

What follows is a harrowing and suspense-filled tale that Hatchard and Idris-Roberts perform with an endearing boyish charm that acts as a stark comparison to the increasingly-darkening script.

By the time the interval rolled around, there was an atmosphere in the theatre that hinted at just how on edge the audience were, but nothing could prepare us for the rollercoaster of the second act as Idris-Roberts drew us in for the play’s powerful climax, which is so gripping you will be reluctant to even blink through fear of missing a second.

The impeccable Phoebe Thomas joins the show in act two, delivering a necessary warmth to the play as well as adding to the underlying sense of fear, anticipation and tension that is quickly approaching boiling point.

Taking patrons on a heart-racing journey, the fast pace of the final scenes will see the hair on the back of your neck stand on end as Idris-Roberts embraces his chance to shine and proves himself as an actor to watch.

Showing off his stunning range as he delves into the many layers and complexities of Seb, Idris-Roberts concludes the play with a moving performance that you won’t forget in a hurry; especially when coupled with his two cast mates.

A holy trinity of talent, together Hatchard, Idris-Roberts, and Thomas, alongside the impressive crew, have created a golden slice of must-see London theatre that anybody would be mad to miss.
