Madonna accepts undisclosed damages over media's 'invasion of privacy'

Madonna has accepted undisclosed damages from Associated Newspapers following a “serious invasion of privacy”.

The star went to London’s High Court after the MailOnline published an article providing personal details about four-year-old twins, Stella and Esther, who Madonna adopted in February.

At the time of the adoption, the singer asked the media to “respect our privacy during this transitional time” and was left severely “distressed” when the MailOnline did not adhere to her request.

The article revealed the girls’ names, race, age, the fact that they lived in a Malawi orphanage, and that Madonna had pending applications to adopt them.

The star’s solicitor, Jenny Afia, said that the article caused Madonna “considerable personal distress” at the time.

Speaking to Mrs Justice Nicola Davies in court earlier today, Ms. Afia said: “The MailOnline published it at a time when, as the journalist ought to have appreciated, Madonna would be powerless to protect the girls from harm.

“Their actions could, in her view, have threatened the integrity and/or outcome of the adoption process which would have had potentially life-changing implications for the girls, as well as for Madonna and her family.”

Madonna will donate the undisclosed damages to The Mercy James Institute for Paediatric Surgery in Malawi, with her solicitor adding: “She is pleased that at least some good can come out of the situation.”
