Game Of Thrones originally had a Jon Snow, Arya Stark and Tyrion Lannister love triangle

As far as controversial TV programmes go, Game Of Thrones is pretty high up there, with the fantasy-drama famed for its incredibly violent scenes, sexual promiscuity, and incestuous story lines.

However, it has now been discovered that Westeros was once going to be even more outrageous, with it being revealed that author George RR Martin originally planned for Jon Snow, Arya Stark and Tyrion Lannister to be involved in a love triangle.

Yes, that is Jon and his (much younger) half-sister Arya.

The shock storyline was revealed in Martin’s original pitch letter to HarperCollins publishers back in the 90s, with the author explaining his original concept for ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’ to his eventual book publishers.

Excerpts of Martin’s pitch were leaked in a series of tweets back in 2015 and although they were hastily deleted, HarperCollins did confirm that the letter was legit.

The controversial plot revealed within the letter somehow got swept under the carpet, with nobody really paying attention to it for two years – however, Vanity Fair have now dug the letter out to let us all know what the fate of Westeros originally was.

Martin’s pitch read: “Arya will be more forgiving… Until she realizes, with terror, that she has fallen in love with Jon, who is not only her half-brother but a man of the Night’s Watch, sworn to celibacy.

“Their passion will continue to torment Jon and Arya throughout the trilogy, until the secret of Jon’s true parentage is finally revealed in the last book.”

Which all but confirms last season’s revelation that Jon is actually a Targaryen, although he’d still be Arya’s cousin as it has been confirmed that his real mother is Ned Stark’s sister, Lyanna.

Tyrion was also set to get caught up in the incestuous love affair, with Martin’s letter continuing: “Exiled, Tyrion will change sides, making common cause with the surviving Starks to bring his brother down, and falling helplessly in love with Arya Stark while he’s at it.

“His passion is, alas, unreciprocated [sic], but no less intense for that, and it will lead to a deadly rivalry between Tyrion and Jon Snow.”

This idea, aside from Tyrion changing sides, appears to have been completely scrapped.

Martin’s initial pitch also made it clear that he plans for Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark, Jon Snow, Bran Stark and Tyrion Lannister to survive the entire trilogy of books, however, considering how much has already changed from his original plans, we wouldn’t bet that these characters are definitely safe.
