'Floating city' in the sky freaks out Chinese residents

A series of “floating skyscrapers” have emerged above a city in China, with local residents speculating the “city” is a sign of alien life.

Remarkable footage shows a series of distorted building-like objects circling above various Chinese cities, creating a number of different theories.

The sight has been spotted four times over the past two years, creating further rumours of a potential extra-terrestrial invasion.

Unfortunately for conspiracy theorists, the sight is not parallel universe, a “Project Blue Beam hologram” from NASA or alien life.

The spectacular cloud formation is actually a weather phenomenon known as "fata morgana".

The optical phenomenon occurs because rays of light are bent when they pass through air layers of different temperatures.

This in-turn creates an inversion of distant objects making the images seem like they are stacked.

“Our brain assumes that light travels in a straight paths, so when it bends, we think the object is where it would be if the light's path runs straight,” Astronomy expert Suryanarayana Maddu explained.

“In this case, light reflected from the skyscrapers is bent downward as it passes through the colder, denser air.

“Because the brain puts the object where it would be if the light travelled a straight path, the distant skyscrapers appear higher than they actually are.”
