Former Love Island contestant Kady McDermott reveals show secrets

It’s safe to say that Love Island has beaten this year’s series of Big Brother to become the go-to reality series of the summer.

Viewers can’t get enough of the ITV2 dating show, which sees a group of singletons attempt to win love, and the prize fund, in a luxury villa in Majorca.

Now 2016 contestant Kady McDermott has revealed a whole load of show secrets from her time on the programme, admitting that being on the show is actually pretty “boring” and that producers even enforce strict alcohol rations.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Kady – who is still dating Love Island partner Scott Thomas – explained: “There were 68 rotating cameras in the house and outside, and they were hidden on the walls.

“There were also two men – one by the kitchen and one by the smoking area – outside, with proper, massive cameras.

“The whole garden set was fake and set up so they could hide in the furniture with all their equipment. You couldn’t see the men, but sometimes we would chat to them and ask, ‘You alright?’ and they would respond by nodding the camera.”

“At night time we weren’t allowed a lot of alcohol,” Kady continued, “During the first four or five days when we didn’t know each other we had alcohol to break the ice, but then after that it was two glasses of wine a night.

“And we were sure it was watered down as well! I don’t get that at all.”

The reality star went on to admit that contestants weren’t allowed to sleep past 9.30am and there were no clocks in the entire villa, leaving desperate housemates trying to work out the time of day by the sun.

The contestants were also allowed to message one another on their phones but had absolutely no access to the outside world, with last year’s series being plagued with technical difficulties when it came to the texts according to Kady.

She shared: “We had loads of problems with our phones last year.

“It would take like five minutes for the message from producers to actually come through. It was a nightmare because it took so long to load, and obviously you don’t see that on the TV.”

The contestants also have to undertake “tiring” retakes during challenges but were given a whole load of free products from sponsor company Superdrug during their time in the house, with Kady admitting that ITV made sure that everybody was looked after.

She said: “There’s a medic on site 24 hours a day and on standby during the challenges to make sure everyone was OK. If producers thought we were sunburnt, they would call us into The Beach Hut and advise you to sit out of the sun or look after yourself.

“About 500 yards out of the villa, there are these little huts that producers and security live in. It’s where they would edit the footage and people would be watching us 24 hours a day, I guess to see what was going on and if we were OK.”

All in all, Love Island life still sounds like a pretty heavenly experience… Minus the watered down wine, of course.
