Love Island's Camilla Thurlow praised for schooling Jonny Mitchell on feminism

If there is one place you wouldn’t expect to see a lesson in feminism, it’s probably ITV2’s reality series Love Island.

But last night viewers were left delighted when popular contestant Camilla Thurlow schooled her date, Jonny Mitchell, on what feminism actually is.

Camilla held her own in the debate.

It started when Jonny admitted he would feel “emasculated” if he didn’t pay when he went on a date with a girl. Camilla responded by saying she would feel “awkward” if she didn’t contribute financially.

Jonny continued: “I wouldn’t let you pay. Honestly, I wouldn’t. I’d find it really awkward. Totally.

“You’re a feminist aren’t you?”

Camilla quite rightly responded: “Shouldn’t we all be feminists? Surely you believe in equality.”

Camilla was clearly stunned by Jonny’s attitude.

Jonny retorted that he thinks “feminism believes in almost inequality”, continuing: “The majority of feminists, real feminists, believe in a slope towards them, rather than towards men.”

Camilla continued: “I don’t think it’s that, but I think it’s difficult for men to see that there’s been several generations which have been preferential towards men and therefore to redress the balance, there has to be in some way an active movement towards equality.

“There’s still, if you look at the number of females in high powered jobs, high level jobs…”

Jonny claimed that women have more opportunities than men.

Jonny interrupted: “The Prime Minister’s a woman.”

Camilla went on: “Sure, and then how many other female MPs are there?”

Either completely ignorant or simply baiting Camilla, Jonny replied: “Enough. It’s not like it’s a boy’s club. I’m sure they just choose who’s more qualified for the job.”

Undeterred, Camilla asked: “But do you think truly that we’ve achieved equality in the UK? Do you honestly believe women have equal opportunities to men?”

Camilla was teary-eyed after the debate.

Jonny insisted: “I believe that women almost have more opportunities.”

Unsurprisingly, the two decided to go their separate ways for the rest of the night as Camilla admitted to some of the other girls that feminism probably wasn’t the right thing to discuss “under these circumstances”.

However, Camilla had the full support of viewers at home, who tweeted:

Camilla has previously reportedly dated Prince Harry, but has so yet to comment on the apparent romance.
