Stormzy admits 'it could have been me up there' in poignant Grenfell Tower rap

Today marks the one week anniversary of the tragic Grenfell Tower blaze, which saw at least 79 people lose their lives when the West London apartment block went up in flames just before 1am.

Those who managed to survive the fire have lost their homes alongside all of their possessions, with the nation clubbing together to raise money for those who have been affected.

This morning, Simon Cowell and a huge collection of A-list musicians released their charity single, a cover version of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, with all proceeds from the track going to victims.

With the likes of Robbie Williams, Louis Tomlinson and Rita Ora providing vocals, rapper Stormzy was asked to pen a new verse for the start of the song – and the star has been widely praised for his efforts.

In the poignant rap, Stormzy – who was born in Croydon, South London – admits that the tragedy resonated with him so strongly because it could have been him or a relative caught up in the blaze.

The full verse is as follows: “I don’t know where to begin so I’ll start by saying I refuse to forget you.

“I refuse to be silenced. I refuse to neglect you.

“As for every last soul up in Grenfell, even though I’ve never met you, that could be my mum’s house.

“That could be my nephew.

“That could have been me up there, waving my white plain tee up there.

“With my friends on the ground trying to see up there.

“I just hope that you rest and you’re free up there.

“I can’t feel your pain but I see what it is, I went to the block just to chill with the kids.

“When troubled waters coming running past I’m gonna be right there.”

Taking to social media to praise the moving lyrics, fans wrote:

The Artists For Grenfell charity single was first played on radio stations at 8am this morning, with Simon Cowell tweeting that the accompanying video will premiere before Coronation Street this [21 June] evening.

Speaking about the track, Simon – who also donated £100,000 to Grenfell Tower victims – said: “Following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in West London, the record industry came together to record a single for the victims of the disaster.

“Over 50 artists gave their time and support to make this happen.”

Speaking previously, the music mogul had said: “I felt how everyone felt when they saw the news. I was angry, upset, thinking what the hell do you do?”

“It’s not far from where I live, so when I drove up there, and you saw this tower, it wasn’t great. And that’s when you decide that maybe we could do something to help.

“You kind of think, what can I do? Do you donate some money and I was thinking, well maybe we could do a little more than that and that’s how the record came about.”

The Artists for Grenfell Tower’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ was largely recorded at Sarn Studios, just half a mile from Grenfell Tower, and is available to buy now.
