BAFTA TV Awards: Sue Perkins throws shade at Bake Off as she reunites with Mary Berry

We were all seriously excited for Sue Perkins to take to the stage for the Bafta TV Awards earlier this evening, with the former Great British Bake Off co-host sure to provide us with a laugh-a-minute for the BBC award ceremony.

However, we weren’t quite prepared for just how sassy Sue was going to be in her first major appearance since Bake Off was sold to Channel 4, with the much-loved presenter unable to resist throwing a fair bit of shade at Love Productions over the whole ordeal.

Sue couldn’t resist making the cheeky quip.

In case you have somehow missed all of the Bake Off hoo-haa, the BBC lost their rights to the show’s format after the production company was poached by Channel 4, who paid £75million to take over the rights for the show.

Out of loyalty to the BBC, Sue and her co-host, Mel Giedroyc refused to move to Channel 4 with the show, as well as judge Mary Berry.

Speaking in her opening monologue at the Baftas tonight, Mel joked about BBC drama ‘The Replacement’, quipping: “How amazing were Vicky McClure and Morven Christie in ‘The Replacement’?

Sue, Mel and Mary all refused to move to Channel 4.

“A show about how stressful it can be when someone takes over your job.

“I mean, I really couldn’t relate to it.”

She continued: “Genuinely, hand on heart, best of luck to the new ‘Bake Off’ team. They are going to need it – they’re about to discover what Mel and I left them in the groundsheet.”

But that wasn’t enough for Sue, who later remarked: “Best crack on before someone sells the format to Channel 4.”

Ouch, that’s got to hurt.

Earlier this evening, viewers were delighted when Sue and Mary were reunited onscreen, taking part in a game of strip poker in a sketch during the show’s opening credits.

All in all, Sue got the thumbs up from Bafta fans up and down the country, with many taking to social media to comment on what a brilliant host she has been.

See you next year, Sue? We sure hope so.
