The historic Santana drum set that Michael Shrieve played at the 1969 Woodstock festival was one of the priciest items sold on May 20 at the “Music Icons 2017” auction at New York City’s Hard Rock Café. The drum set sold for $187,500 and was one of more than 380 lots in the sale hosted by Julien’s Auctions.
Other rock-related collectibles included John Lennon’s original sketch for the album cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The sketch was estimated to sell for between $40,000 and $60,000, but wound up going for $87,500.
The rare drawing was found in a sketchbook by the owners of Lennon’s former home in Surrey, England. Lennon lived there with his then wife, Cynthia, and wrote several Beatles hits in the mansion, including much of the Sgt. Pepper’s album.
An original painting by late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain of four raccoons in a black tree commanded $64,000.
But the most expensive item at the auction was a horseshoe-shaped diamond ring that Elvis Presley wore during his famous 1973 “Aloha from Hawaii” television special. The ring fetched $204,800. One of the King’s Quaalude prescription bill bottles was also up for sale, nabbing $11,520.
More interested in the King of Pop? The jacket Michael Jackson wore in his Leave Me Alone video went for $112,500. A Gibson Les Paul guitar Slash played during the 2011 Super Bowl Halftime Show brought in $87,500, and a cape worn by The Who’s Roger Daltrey at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival sold for $46,250.
The auction also included items from The Beach Boys, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Frank Sinatra and others. In all, the celebrity auction brought in nearly $3 million. You can check out the complete auction results here.
