BAFTA TV Awards: Danny Dyer makes first public appearance since extended EastEnders' break

Danny Dyer made his first public appearance since he hit the headlines for taking an extended break from BBC One soap EastEnders at the BAFTA Television Awards on Sunday night, with the cockney actor citing exhaustion and stress as his reason for disappearing from our screens.

The soap star was nominated for one of the prestigious gongs thanks to his appearance on Who Do You Think You Are?

Danny provided TV gold when he took part in the BBC programme and learned that he is a direct descendent of Edward III, with the moment being nominated for Virgin TV’s Must-See Moment Of The Year.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Danny said of his royal bloodline: “I didn’t believe it and I still don’t believe it. I try and use it but no one believes me. How do you get your head around it?

“I am royalty and hopefully we can nick a little award for it.

“Me and my relatives up against Line Of Duty and Game Of Thrones, it could go either way but, just for my ancestors, it would be nice to nick it.

“Edward III lives on through me.”

Unfortunately, Danny and his ancestors lost out to Planet Earth’s gripping snake vs iguana chase, however, Dan still managed to get on stage when Who Do You Think You Are? won Best Feature.

Danny’s red carpet appearance comes ahead of his EastEnders’ alter ego’s grand return to Albert Square later this week, with Mick Carter set to return to the Queen Vic after Danny’s emergency break saw him get hastily written out of the script.

Sadly, he lost out at the Baftas for Virgin TV’s must-see moment to Planet Earth II’s intense footage of baby iguanas and snakes, but we’re certainly glad to see Danny back to his old self and we can only hope that he is feeling well-rested and ready for a no-doubt hectic year ahead.
