Ezra Miller was warned he'd 'made a mistake in Hollywood' after coming out as queer

Despite launching his acting career in the early noughties, it was 2011 that saw Ezra Miller begin to establish himself as an indie darling – starring in We Need To Talk About Kevin, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and The Stanford Prison Experiment.

As his Hollywood profile started to rise in 2012, Ezra came out as “queer” in a candid interview – and now the star, who has gone on to find mainstream success in huge movie franchises such as Justice League and Fantastic Beasts, has revealed that he was warned he’d made a “mistake” for publicly labelling his sexual identity.

Speaking to Shortlist magazine, the 25-year-old actor confessed that Hollywood bigwigs warned him not to be open about his sexuality as it would affect his future career.

Ezra explained: “I was told by a lot of people I’d made a mistake. Folks in the industry, folks outside the industry. People I’ve never spoken to.

“They said there’s a reason so many gay, queer, gender-fluid people in Hollywood conceal their sexual identity, or their gender identity in their public image.

“I was told I had done a ‘silly’ thing, thwarting my own potential to be a leading man.

“I was given a lot of stern talking-tos.”

However, Ezra’s career has only gone from strength to strength since he revealed that he has romantic relationships with both men and women, landing the role of superhero The Flash – the first openly queer actor to play such a role.

Ezra came out in an interview with Out magazine, saying at the time: “I’m queer. I have a lot of really wonderful friends who are of very different sexes and genders.

“I am very much in love with no one in particular. I’ve been trying to figure out relationships, you know?”

Recalling a male schoolfriend who he used to “fool around with”, Ezra added: “I was trying to kiss boys in school.

“He had some macho realization that led him to believe that I was the problem. So I went from having a stutter to being a totally gay little opera singer to being, like, a really confused queer adolescent.”

The star has now confessed that he knows a lot of “closeted” actors, adding: “It would be a good idea to re-examine how this is working for us.

“These ideas. These values. Is it really working for us? Honestly?”

Ezra stars in Justice League alongside the likes of Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, with the actor also set to lead The Flash’s standalone film ‘Flashpoint’ in 2020.
