Dermot O'Leary calls for Hugh Grant to be Prime Minister

Ever since Love Actually was released in 2003, the British public have been wishing one thing: Can’t Hugh Grant be our Prime Minister?

Funny, personable and – most importantly – unafraid to stand up to big, scary America, Hugh’s interpretation of PM David warmed the hearts of viewers across the globe, and now Dermot O’Leary has taken to social media to call for Grant to become the UK’s Prime Minister for real.

Dermot is not happy with the political state of the UK.

In a rare political discussion, the X Factor host appeared to be making a jibe at how Theresa May has handled Donald Trump’s presidency, with the PM – who wasn’t elected by the British public – sparking controversy when she refused to condemn Trump’s so-called ‘Muslim Ban’.

Furthermore, photos emerged of May and Trump holding hands as it was confirmed that she has invited him on a state visit to the United Kingdom, sparking a petition to have him banned.

Taking to Twitter, Dermot shared a link to one of Grant’s most iconic Love Actually scenes with the caption: “Think now might be the best time to put Hugh Grant in charge…”

The scene in question shows David standing up to the US president, played by Billy Bob Thornton, poignantly saying: “I fear that this has become a bad relationship; a relationship based on the President taking exactly what he wants and casually ignoring all those things that really matter to Britain.

“We may be a small country, but we’re a great one, too. The country of Shakespeare, Churchill, the Beatles, Sean Connery, Harry Potter. David Beckham’s right foot. David Beckham’s left foot, come to that.

“And a friend who bullies us is no longer a friend. And since bullies only respond to strength, from now onward I will be prepared to be much stronger.

“And the President should be prepared for that.”

Dermot followed up by quickly tweeting a link to the petition: ‘Prevent Donald Trump from making a State Visit to the United Kingdom‘, which currently has 988,264 signatures.
