A man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder after stabbing his heavily pregnant fiancée in the face.

Petar Petrov attacked his partner at their home in Densworth Grove, north London, last August.

The Old Bailey heard yesterday (Wednesday) that the 30-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, is still in hospital in a critical condition.

The healthy baby was delivered by emergency caesarean on August 9.

Neighbours reported hearing an hour of loud arguing from the couple on the evening of August 5, followed by a loud bang which was compared to a car crash.

The Bulgarian hotel worker, 31, was found lying outside the property covered in blood and glass by a member of the public at around 9.15pm.

When neighbours came to help, the man went into the property and found the pregnant woman lying on the floor.

She was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, including facial fractures, severe bruising of the lungs and a stab wound to the face.

Detective Inspector Chris Skelt of Enfield Police Community Safety Unit said: “This has been a truly shocking case.

“It is incomprehensible to think that a father-to-be could carry out such a violent and horrific attack on his fiancé knowing she was carrying their baby.

“I would like to commend the members of the public who were first at this distressing scene, and who performed first aid on the injured parties and called the emergency services.

“Their quick actions and bravery were crucial in getting the victim the medical attention she needed, saving her child’s life.

“Sadly she remains in a persistent vegetative state, however thankfully her child was born without injuries via caesarean section.”

The pair had moved into the flat the month before to prepare for the baby’s birth.

Petrov was found with self-inflicted wounds and injuries described as being consistent with falling from a height.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital and subsequently arrested. He will be sentenced next month.
