Coronation Street stars are 'banned' from taking part in Strictly Come Dancing

Every year it is pretty much guaranteed that Strictly Come Dancing’s line-up will feature at least one EastEnders’ star, with Jake Wood, Kellie Bright and Jessie Wallace taking part over the years, and Davood Ghadami, who play Kush Kazemi in the BBC One soap, being announced as a 2017 contestant earlier this week.

Now Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard has revealed why we are never treated to a Corrie character on the famous ballroom dance floor, claiming that stars from the ITV soap are banned from signing up.

Blaming the “malarkey” between ITV and the BBC, Beverley, who plays Liz McDonald in Coronation Street, opened up during an appearance on This Morning.

Wishing announced contestant Ruth Langsford luck in the forthcoming series of the show, Beverley said: “I’m so jealous you’re doing Strictly, I will vote for you I promise.”

When Ruth asked her if she would ever consider taking part, the actress continued: “They won’t let us, that’s the only reality show I would do. I am very jealous.”

Eamonn Holmes enquired whether that was because she is an ITV star, to which Beverley replied: “Oh, it’s all that malarkey.”

ITV declined to comment on Beverley’s claims.

Although Coronation Street stars are reportedly banned from the dance show, actors from ITV’s other popular programmes seemingly aren’t, with former Emmerdale star Gemma Atkinson being the latest name to be revealed for this year’s Strictly line-up.

The Saturdays’ singer Mollie King is also due to take part, with further celebrities expected to be announced in the coming days.
