Chinese Cartoon ‘Where’s the Dragon?’ Set for U.S. Release Via Crimson Forest

Crimson Forest Films and Hannover House are to give a North American release to Chinese 3D animated film “Where’s the Dragon?” The release is planned for Jan. 27, 2017, in time for next year’s Chinese New Year.

The release follows a rights deal with Hong Kong-based sales agency Distribution Workshop. Production was through the DeTao Group and Treasure Tree Studios.

Written and directed by VFX veteran Sing Choong Foo (“Spider-Man,” “Beowulf”), the film follows the journey of a young girl who must join forces with the animals of the Chinese zodiac to find a dragon who has gone missing.

“The animation quality is comparable with the best of the major studios, and we are confident that American audiences will respond strongly to this film,” said Eric Parkinson, CEO of Hannover House.

The original film, which counted Zhang Ziyi and Wang Leehom among the voice cast, was released in China in November year. The U.S. version will be voiced in both Los Angeles and in Fayetteville, Arkansas, under a production partnership with Crisp Recording and Filmworks.

“The story of the Chinese zodiac is both educational and entertaining and is the perfect way to celebrate Chinese New Year with the family this year,” said Jonathan Lim of Crimson Forest. The company, which has offices in Los Angeles and Shanghai, operates as a theatrical and digital distributor as well as an aggregator for digital media, TV, subscription, and cable VoD.
