Danny Dyer blasts Benedict Cumberbatch: 'He'd be useless in EastEnders'

Danny Dyer has never exactly been one to mince his words, and the star did not hold back when discussing fellow actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, in a new interview.

It’s safe to say that Danny gave BBC soap, EastEnders, a new lease of life when he joined the show back in 2013 as patriarch of the much-loved Carter family, and the cockney star reckons not everybody is cut out for the job.

Speaking to the Radio Times magazine, Danny ranted: “Doing soap is the hardest discipline there is. I’d love to see a snotty-nosed actor who says, ‘I’m too good for this,’ come in and be exposed. He would be useless.

“Could he [Benedict Cumberbatch] do a cockney accent? Of course he couldn’t.”

However, Danny went on to admit that different actors excel in different things, adding: “But then I can’t do what Benedict Cumberbatch does.

“We all do what we can do, whether you’re Idris Elba, whether you’re me. No one else can do what Damian Lewis does, which is why he’s got a career.

“And no one can do Danny Dyer like I can do Danny Dyer.”

Ain’t that the truth.

EastEnders’ previous executive producer, Dominic Treadwell-Collins, was said to be desperate to get Benedict in Walford as a cameo before he left earlier this year – an idea that Danny scoffed at at the time.

He explained: “If he walked into a pub he’d get annihilated by geezers. He’d be bullied.”

Ooft, sorry Benedict – you might want to steer clear of Albert Square for the time being…
