Rory McIlroy loses mind, snaps club at British Open
It’s been a rough go for Rory McIlroy at the British Open. Always one of the favorites coming in, McIlroy wasn’t able to get anything going all week. Saturday began ugly in a hurry, with McIlroy bogeying three of the first five holes.
By the 16th, he’d had enough. After an ugly approach shot, he slammed his three-wood to the unforgiving Scottish turf. The club didn’t survive.

It’s not the first time McIlroy has lost his temper on the course; he slung a club into the water at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral last year, and he almost got himself DQ’ed from his first Masters by kicking at the sand while his ball was still in a bunker. But all that, we can understand. It’s not that we have a problem with players slinging and smashing clubs. Our only question, especially on insanely frustrating courses like Royal Troon: why don’t they do it more often?
