House intelligence committee subpoenas DOJ for materials related to Mueller probe, unredacted report

The House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday issued a subpoena to Attorney General William Barr to obtain all counterintelligence and foreign intelligence materials produced by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference into the 2016 presidential election, as well as an unredacted version of Mueller's report.and its underlying evidence.

Rep. Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, in a letter to Barr said the move comes after "repeated, bipartisan overtures and multiple unreciprocated efforts" to reach a reasonable accommodation with the Department of Justice about the committee's requests.

"The Department's failure to engage and negotiate with the Committee, and its failure to comply in any meaningful way with the Committee's bipartisan document request, necessitates the issuance of the attached subpoena," Schiff, D-Calif., wrote in a letter to Barr.

The committee is requesting all documents — regardless of their classification — that are referenced in the unredacted report, in addition to all documents and materials obtained by Mueller's team during the course of its nearly two-year investigation that refer or relate to foreign entities, those associated with representatives of foreign individuals or entities, and any documentation of links between U.S. citizens and foreign individuals or entities.

Any documents relating to "any effort to influence, impede, obstruct congressional investigations" are also being asked for by the committee.

The subpoena requires the Justice Department to turn over the documents in one week by May 15.

Schiff, and Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the committee, have previously sent bipartisan letters in March and April to the Justice Department requesting the documents now sought by the subpoena.

The subpoena comes the same day that the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Barr in contempt after he refused to produce an unredacted copy of Mueller's 448-page report and its underlying evidence in response to a subpoena issued by that committee.

Schiff said in a statement that if the department ignores or rejects the committee's request, then it will turn to the courts.

“The law is on our side," he said in the statement. "The Committee’s efforts to obtain necessary documents to do our constitutionally-mandated oversight work will not be obstructed.”
