Architecture firm designs sustainable ‘city-forest’ utopia that can house 20,000 people
Italian firm Luca Curci Architects came up with an idea that aimed to improve overall quality of city life through increased sustainability and technology. The Link is a “conscious oriented” vertical city plan that can host up to 20,000 people, and tackles the environmental issues that come with the rise of urban sprawl.
Luca Curci Architects developed the idea for The Link after studying the downsides of urban life. According to their project site, 5 billion people are projected to be living in cities by 2030. Cities occupy a small portion of the planet but contribute the majority of energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The firm wanted to tackle three major problems: climate change, urban sprawl and increasing poverty rates.
The Link is comprised of four main towers that cover 1,200,000 square meters of green space with over 2 million plants. The tallest tower will be almost 4,000 feet tall and will house all of the residents in its 300 floors. The other towers will be comprised of offices, government departments, healthcare facilities and educational institutions (including all levels of school and universities).
Each building will host places that encourage a sense of community and better mental health. Water baths, markets, spiritual and cultural hubs will be made readily available for all residents.
The space will also be programmed with a smart city artificial intelligence that controls the city temperature, levels of carbon dioxide, humidity and lighting system.
The architects also anticipate that the urban operating system will improve poverty rates because of newfound community cohesiveness and healthier lifestyles.
In terms of this healthier lifestyle, food production and farming will be integrated with a zero-waste policy. Farming will be part of the social space — encouraging communities to grow their own food and be self-sufficient.
As of now, the plan is that Luca Curci Architects will present the idea to multiple major cities throughout the world, hoping to connect to institutions and private investors for funding.
