Gennady Golovkin slams 'cheating' Canelo, De La Hoya over drug test: 'It's not Mexican meat'

On March 5, Canelo Alvarez tested positive for trace amounts of banned substance clenbuterol while training for his highly anticipated rematch with middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

The bout was scheduled for May 5 in Las Vegas after the two fought to a controversial draw last year in a fantastic fight that many thought Golovkin deserved to win.

Canelo’s team, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, said the positive test was due to contaminated meat, a claimed backed up by the lab that conducted the test.

“These values are all within the range of what is expected from meat contamination,” lab director Daniel Eichner said.

On Tuesday, Golovkin lashed out at those claims to reporters at his Southern California training center at Big Bear Lake.

“Again with Mexican meat? Come on,” Golovkin said. “I told you, it’s not Mexican meat. This is Canelo. This is his team. This is his promotion. … Canelo is cheating. They’re using these drugs, and everybody is just trying to pretend it’s not happening.”

Golovkin continued to accuse Canelo of having doped prior to their last match while taking on De La Hoya.

“It was pretty obvious when (Alvarez’s) muscles were all (enlarged) … and with the traces of injections, which were visible,” Golovkin said, speaking through his translator. ”I can talk about Oscar De La Hoya, too. He is also not clean. He’s dirty.”

Golden Boy president Eric Gomez was quick to strike back in an email to the Associated Press.

“He doesn’t sound like a confident fighter,” Gomez wrote. “GGG is trying to find a way out. If he doesn’t want the fight, he should just say so. Just last week he said the exact opposite. His remarks about needle marks, Oscar and every other lie are outrageous, false and defamatory, and we will deal with them appropriately.”

Despite Canelo’s positive drug test, the fight appears likely to go on as it’s expected to be a huge draw on one of boxing’s biggest traditional dates, Cinco de Mayo.

For now, the two fighters seem content adding fuel to the fire with attacks through the media.

“Ask any doctor,” Golovkin said.” Let him explain what those (muscles) are. It’s better even to use the lie detector. Then there wouldn’t be any silly questions about meat or fruits or chocolate.”
