Coronation Street 'get revenge' on Bruno Langley with 'humiliating' exit storyline

Coronation Street have seemingly made a dig at actor Bruno Langley after he pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault last week.

The ITV soap have written Bruno’s onscreen character, Todd Grimshaw, out of the show following the incident, and it has been reported that they have not held back in his offscreen departure.

According to reports, Todd will go on the run after hitting a police officer and the scriptwriters have stuck the boot in further by having the character’s mum, Eileen, played by Sue Cleaver, make an apparent loose reference to Bruno’s own career.

In the telling remark, Eileen will say of Todd’s arrest: “He had everything he ever wanted and now he’s lost it all.”

An insider told The Mirror: “Corrie haven’t held back with his exit storyline and will not give him an easy way out.

“It makes you wonder whether the writers had Bruno’s case in the forefront of their mind when penning the scenes.”

Bruno has starred in Corrie for 16 years and was the soap’s first openly gay character; his exit is expected to air at the beginning of the New Year.

A source added: “Coronation Street wanted to address the Bruno issue as soon as possible and completely draw a line under the matter.

“People were torn backstage when it was revealed he was being investigated. Some felt that the stigma of something like this would be devastating if it turned out not to be true.

“But now he’s admitted it there’s a sense of disbelief. They think he’s so stupid and wrecked his career over something he claims he was too drunk to remember.

“People don’t condone his behaviour whatsoever and agree with what has happened to him but there is still a kind of empathy in the sense that his acting career is over.”

Last week a judge heard how Bruno grabbed the first victim by her crotch after she collected her coat from the cloakroom, with the woman saying that she was “too shocked and angry” to react before she reported the incident to the police.

The second victim said that she was “forcefully touched” in an “intimate place” by the star.

Bruno, who was drunk at the time of the assaults, admitted to having a problem with alcohol and pleaded guilty to both assaults.

He avoided jail and was instead given a 12-month community order and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for five years as well as pay £500 in compensation.

Speaking after his sentence, Bruno said: “I sincerely apologise to the people involved and affected by my disgraceful behaviour.

“I have no memory of what happened because of excessive alcohol consumption and it was for this reason I behaved completely out of character.”

Bruno split from his long-term girlfriend Victoria Roscoe earlier this year, with the pair having a 10-year-old son together.
