This is why people aren't happy that Blake Shelton was named 'Sexiest Man Alive'

People have expressed their shock after Blake Shelton, was named People magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ for 2017, with the country singer and The Voice judge dethroning last year’s winner Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Previous winners also include the likes of David Beckham, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney.

The decision to crown Blake this year’s winner upset a lot of people, namely due to the fact that the star has previously come under fire for controversial tweets in the past – particularly between 2009 – 2011.

One tweet, seemingly about TV presenter Ellen DeGeneres, read: “I’m not gay but I think Ellen is hot!… Wait a minute.. What?!”

Another: “Grown men who wear Chuck Taylor’s may as well write on their forehead: ‘Cucumbers turn me on!!!'”

He also made racist remarks on the social media site, such as: “Wish the d*ckhead in the next room would either shut up or learn some English so I would at least know what he’s planning to bomb!!”

And: “Nothing says ‘Happy 4th of July’ like an airport shuttle bus driver than can’t speak a F***ING word of English! To the terminal, Omar!”

Speaking out on his old tweets in a statement last year, Blake said: “Everyone knows comedy has been a major part of my career and it’s always been out there for anyone to see.

“That said anyone that knows me also knows I have no tolerance for hate of any kind or form. Can my humor at times be inappropriate and immature? Yes. Hateful? Never.

“That said I deeply apologize to anybody who may have been offended.”

Needless to say, People’s decision to label Blake as this year’s sexiest man alive triggered a huge response, with people taking to Twitter to share their reactions:

People’s editor-in-chief Jess Cagle previously defended her decision to name Blake this year’s winner, saying that he was chosen for his “considerable charm,” and because he uses his “gifts and [his] talents to make the world a better place.”
