Warner Bros. Working On Six Wonder Woman Scripts?

It looks as though Warner Bros. is keen to get ‘Wonder Woman’ right… but at what cost? Apparently, they’ve hired six writers to write six entirely different scripts.

‘Wonder Woman’ is proving to be one of DC’s most highly-anticipated movies. And as a symbol of female empowerment, it’s about time she was brought to the big screen. But with all this pressure to get the movie right, it looks as though Warner Bros. is resorting to extreme measures to ensure a solid script…

According to screenwriter Aresh Amel, the folks at Warner Bros. have employed a cunning tactic to get the best ‘Wonder Woman’ script they can – by hiring six writers to pen six very different scripts.

“Someone just told me six writers have been hired to simultaneously write six versions of Wonder Woman movie,” he said via Twitter. “WHAT? Worrying trend of simultaneous [development] on major franchises growing. This is wrong on so many levels.”

Of course, this isn’t exactly the usual approach to a big screen blockbuster. And while it’s clear that Warner Bros. wants to cherry pick the best script (or script elements) from the pick of the crop, it also means that a fair few writers could end up working for no end product.

“I’m sure Hollywood screenwriter’s career will soon resemble the sweatshop that makes tennis shoes for Nike,” he added. And it certainly seems like a bad deal for whoever has been tapped to write one of these scripts.

Obviously, we have no idea of their individual deals, and they could be compensated rather well for such an unusual project… but it’s still a worrying trend to see writers used in such a sterile way.

But will this produce the very best ‘Wonder Woman’ script?

Although I don’t exactly agree with the business practice, it might just help Warner Bros. to come up with something really great. And after years of struggling to put together a viable ‘Wonder Woman’ script, perhaps they need all the help they can get.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but the fact that ‘Wonder Woman’ is heading to our screens at all is a big leap forward. Let’s just hope it’s a great film, too.

‘Wonder Woman’ heads to cinemas on 23 June 2017.
