8 Ways to Celebrate Your Engagement

Go ahead and change your Facebook status; then try one of these to make your engagement extra special.

1. Take an engagement-cation.

Take a long weekend together away from everyone else to really celebrate your new status, even if it's just a short road trip to a neighboring town's bed-and-breakfast. Just don't have the time to get away? Then declare a "staycation" weekend where you turn off your phones and relax at home.

2. Have an engagement party.
We know this one seems a little obvious -- but take your party one step further by building it around a theme and hosting it in a fun location. Have a wine tasting at a nearby bar or restaurant for your closest friends, do a backyard BBQ with red-and-white-checkered tablecloths or even try a luau-themed party with tons of flowers and tiki-inspired cocktails.

3. Make a video and upload it to YouTube.
If you've got friends and family across the country, making a cute video where you announce your engagement is an easy (and fast!) way to spread the word. You could do something simple, using your phones or built-in computer camera, or put together something more elaborate, like a photo collage with narration. Just make sure you tell the really important people -- your parents, your best friends -- before you email the link to everyone.

4. Go out together.
No, not to your usual neighborhood dive bar -- go out to that really nice restaurant you've been talking about for months now. Take some time to get dressed up and make it an event.

5. Buy an expensive bottle of bubbly.
A bottle of the current vintage of Dom Perignon, one of the world's best champagnes, if not the most well-known, will set you back about $150. But if you store it properly, you can save it for the next decade and celebrate with it on your 10th anniversary. Or buy two -- one for now and one for later.

6. Take engagement photos.
Not only is this a great way to celebrate your engagement, it's also a good way to test out a potential wedding day photographer. You'll get to know your photographer's style so you can make an informed decision about your wedding, and you'll also have some instant keepsakes -- perfect for including on your save-the-dates.

7. Write letters.
Capture those feelings of excitement and elation by taking the time to write a short love letter to each other. Tuck them away somewhere safe and read them to each other on your honeymoon. Or better yet, incorporate the letters into your ceremony or even as part of your vows.

8. Propose back.
Why have only one person wear a ring when you both could? We love the idea of "man-gagement rings," as they're sometimes called, as a way to make it known that you're both officially off the market. You can pick out the second ring together, or surprise your fiance with a fun proposal of your own.
