Caroline Wozniacki calls on boyfriend Rory McIlroy to play against Maria Sharapova

When organizers scheduled Monday's exhibition match between Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova, they were undoubtedly hoping it would involve a No. 1 player. They got their wish.

Late during Wozniacki's straight-set loss at Madison Square Garden, she called on the new No. 1 player in golf, boyfriend Rory McIlroy, to play a point. McIlroy had been sitting in the stands watching Wozniacki and Sharapova battle in a matchup of former No. 1s.

During the final changeover of the match, Sharapova had an impromptu, on-court dance-off with a young girl and an older man. Wozniacki, seemingly left out, looked for a dance partner of her own. She asked the crowd whether any "hot guys" would come onto the court to dance with her and a 22-year-old gentleman in a striped sweater obliged. (Notice how Rory's hand shoots up immediately after the question.)

McIlroy, who won the Honda Classic on Sunday to become the No. 1 player in golf, gingerly came out of the stands to give his girlfriend a hug. Then, as she egged him on, Rory took Wozniacki's racquet and played a point against Sharapova. He jokingly stood over the ball like a tee shot before lobbing an underhand serve and rallying for a few shots. One of his forehands threatened to sail long but Sharapova graciously hit it back. On her next shot, she pushed a shot wide, giving McIlroy the point.

After the match, Sharapova joked about Rory's tennis prowess. "He won more points than Caroline did," Sharapova with unintentional brusqueness.
