Tiger Woods confirms mild Achilles strain, can resume hitting balls this week

After wondering what Tiger Woods' status would be for the Masters, the 14-time major winner confirmed on Monday evening via Twitter that he should be good to go for the first major of the year.

"Got good news from doc tonight. Only mild strain of left Achilles. Can resume hitting balls late in week and hopeful for next week," Woods tweeted.

Based on the way Woods exited Doral -- limping to his car and having a couple of ice packs delivered to the driver's side window before he left -- you had to wonder how severe the injury really was.

After withdrawing from the event, Woods confirmed when he left the course, that he "had tightness in the left Achilles warming up and it got progressively worse as the round went on." While it was unclear at the time, Woods' announcement that it's only a mild strain is definitely a best-case scenario at this point.

The even better news is that if Woods resumes hitting balls next weeks, there's still an outside shot he could be ready for Bay Hill, which was supposed to be his final tuneup before the Masters.

However, even if he doesn't get in the final test run in a week, the fact that he could be back on the range at some point in the near future is definitely a positive sign.
