Three-quarters court miracle shot caps wild Division II finish
When two teams trade go-ahead threes in the final 10 seconds of double overtime, that usually qualifies as a memorable finish.
In Friday night's game between Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills, however, that was merely the appetizer.
Inbounding with six tenths of a second remaining after Robert Willhite's off-balance three put Cal State Dominguez Hills ahead by one, Cal Poly Pomona put the ball in the hands of guard Mitchel Anderson. The 6-foot-4 junior heaved a three-quarters court prayer that somehow went in, giving the host Broncos an incredible 60-58 win.
"I've seen games like this on TV but never been a part of one until now," Broncos' head coach Greg Kamansky told the school's official athletics site. "I'm happy for our seniors since this was their night."
Oddly enough, the wild finish to double overtime came after a first overtime in which neither team scored a point. You'd never have known it watching DeRonn Scott and Willhite exchange big threes prior to Anderson's miracle shot.
Cal Poly Pomona's victory capped a successful 18-7 regular season for 2010 Division II champs. They'll have to deliver another deep postseason run this March to top the memory of how their regular season finale ended.
