Fashion that Makes Us Sad: Extreme Sheer Tops
Sheer tops are the trend that won't die and after the latest celebrity sheer top attempt we are now begging women to retire them.
A sheer button-down shirt seems like a nice garment, in theory: if you wear a camisole underneath you can show a little skin without REALLY feeling bare. But then your tank bunches up or your bra peaks out, or you realize your ensemble is a little too Alicia Silverstone in "Clueless."
Of course leave it to celebrities to bring this trend to the frightening next level. Famous ladies like Heidi Klum, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani, Leann Rimes, Kim Kardashian, Katie Holmes, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, January Jones, Kristen Stewart, and Elizabeth Hurley, have all been spotted wearing sheer tops with only a bra underneath. (Which leads us to that other impractical underwear-as-outerwear trend.) Lady Gaga has even skipped the bra and wore a sheer black top with black pasties over her nipples. But last night Rihanna really upped the ante (as pictured above).
Yup. We now understand why Rihanna's album is called "Rated R." Last night, the singer went out to an upscale Italian restaurant in New York City called Da Silvano wearing a sheer shirt with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING underneath. You can click over to US Weekly for the actual photo (we put a black bar over it for decency), but let us just reiterate that the 24-year-old singer went to dinner with her breasts and nipple ring on full display.
This is not OK! It's great that Rihanna is confident and enjoys showing off her body as much as she likes making headlines, but there is a time and a place for such revealing outfits. Hanging out on a topless beach? Totally boob-friendly atmosphere. Twirling spaghetti at Sunday dinner? Not boob friendly! We don't know how this distinction is unclear, but to avoid similar errors, can we put the kibosh on all extremely sheer tops forever? Let's leave something to the imagination.
