Trick or treaters break pensioner’s leg in ‘disgusting’ attack

A gang of youths attacked a pensioner and broke his leg after he refused to open the door to them on Halloween.

The 79-year-old man, of Baguley, Manchester, was seriously injured after being struck with a concrete block as he went out to clean eggs off his house on Monday evening.

A group of five males threw more eggs at him before throwing a concrete block in what police have described as a “disgusting double attack”.

He was taken to hospital where he has received treatment for an injured leg.

Greater Manchester Police said that two boys, aged 12 and 13, have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and bailed pending further inquiries.

Police are appealing to find the other attackers and have described the youths responsible as being white, between 13 and 15 and wearing dark hooded clothing.

Following the attack, Detective Constable Anna Meakin said: “Clearly, these were no genuine trick or treaters, but a group of youths taking advantage of the time of year.

“He is seriously injured but things could have been even worse. The youths responsible have no right to torment an innocent man like this and we will not rest until we have found those responsible.

“We also appreciate that trick-or-treaters can be quite intimidating, especially for older members of the community. You do not have to open the door if you do not want to, and if you are feeling intimidated or frightened then please call the police.”
