Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed List 2011 revealed: Kate Middleton joins the fashion world elite

The Duchess of Cambridge is the first British royal to make it on Vanity Fair’s 72nd annual international ‘Best Dressed’ list.

Since making her official debut back in November 2010, Kate has captivated the fashion world by combining designer and high street style - from the sell-out blue Issa wrap dress to her Reiss outfits.

She’s enjoyed a “whirlwind year of fashion successes", according to the magazine.

Kate first made it onto the Vanity Fair list in 2008, when barely anyone knew about her immaculate style, but now returns as the world’s most talked about royal.

The 29-year-old is joined by ‘Best Dressed’ veteran Michelle Obama, who appears for the fourth year in a row but for the first time with her husband President Barack Obama - as a ‘Best Dressed’ couple.

The same can’t be said for French President Nicholas Sarkozy and wife Carla; she made the list but her hubby didn’t.

Vanity Fair’s yearly list of stylish men and women in the public eye praises an individual’s taste, rather than their ability to translate fashion trends. Names are submitted by influential people in the fashion and entertainment industry then released in a poll for readers to vote.

Kate isn’t the only royal to catch the eye of editors, retailers, socialites and photographers. The other fashionable royal females to make the list include the freshly-crowned Princess Charlene of Monaco, Princess Alexandra of Greece, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser of Qatar and Italian Countess Matilde Borromeo.

Representing Hollywood, first timers include Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth and The Social Network star Justin Timberlake.

UK talent Carey Mulligan, Tilda Swinton and Formula One race driver Jenson Button also made the cut.

Lady Gaga, Janelle Monae and Johnny Depp show up in the ‘fashion originals’ category.

The full list will be featured in the September issue of Vanity Fair on August 9th 2011.
