Shot Cop Saved After Bullet Hits Radio

A police radio that apparently blocked a bullet aimed at an officer has been found - as it emerged a man shot dead by cops was a passenger in a minicab.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation is under way after the death in Ferry Lane, Tottenham, at 6.15pm on Thursday.

A policeman was injured in a shoot-out at 6.15pm on Thursday, but he was later discharged from hospital.

Sky sources believe the officer may have escaped more serious injury because his radio got in the way of a bullet.

A radio with what appeared to be a bullet lodged in it has been recovered, an IPCC spokesman said.

An IPCC spokesman said: "We do not know the order the shots were fired. We understand the officer was shot first before the male was shot."

Jay Crowned, 39, who lives locally, named the dead man as "Mark", a father of four in his late 20s.

She said he had three girls and one boy and described him as "a good daddy".

David Akinsanya, 46, said he arrived at the scene moments after the incident.

He was told by a witness that a police officer had shouted to the man to stop "a couple of times", but the man had not heeded the warning.

The witness, who lives next to the spot where it happened, then heard four shots ring out, said Mr Akinsanya.
