Fern Britton’s first tattoos at 53.

Celebrity tattoos are normally more common amongst rebellious youth; Cher Lloyd and Katie Price are regularly making headlines for showing off their new inkings.

However, Fern Britton turned convention on its head as she revealed her new tattoo inside the August edition of Woman and Home.

Fern, 53, says she’s “enjoying a disgraceful middle age” after deciding to get two butterflies tattooed on the base of her stomach last December.

After her daughter Winnie, 10, gave her a stick-on tattoo, the mum-of-four made the blue and yellow butterfly tattoos permanent, making sure to consult her husband, TV chef Phil Vickery first.

The ex-This Morning host told Woman and Home: “Phil agreed that it looked good, so in my head that was a green light. I had to ring him from the tattooing table because I was going to be late collecting Winnie from school. The conversation went ‘What are you doing?’ ‘Having a tattoo.’ ‘WHAT?”

Fern admitted husband Phil is still “a bit iffy about it” but her children think it’s “cool”.

Inspired by 64-year-old actress Felicity Kendal who tattooed a star on her foot, Fern chose to take the plunge.

She also spoke about how turning 50 has been the catalyst for taking charge of her life.
The TV star said she was no longer obsessed by her appearance. Fern had a gastric band fitted to shed five stone in 2008 which saw her drop from a size 16 to a 12.

She added: “At this chapter of my life, I have the pleasure of being “self-ist”, as a friend of mine calls it.
“[I am] self-ist enough to do what I need without feeling guilty.”
