British woman cracks open 29 double-yolked eggs in a row

When Charlotte Matthews started cracking into a carton of eggs, she had no idea she was about to break a record.

The cake decorator was 'egg-static' after cracking open 29 double-yolked eggs from the same carton that she bought a week ago.

Charlotte was preparing breakfast for her family, in Rochdale, Manchester when the egg-wonder began. The odds of cracking open a double-yolked egg in the UK is one in a thousand — and Charlotte managed to crack a whole carton!

The tray of 30 Smartprice eggs was purchased from her local supermarket retailer Asda for £2.39.

According to the Rochdale Observer, after breaking the eggs one by one Charlotte realised that each had two yolks inside. Husband Gavin grabbed the camera to record the lucky streak as she continued to break open the eggs.

In a dramatic climax Charlotte cracked the final egg, which happened to be the only egg with one yolk.

The eggs are safe to eat, though they can change the outcome of a recipe. Changes to the texture can be longer and thinner than an ordinary single-yolk egg.

The strange two-yolk phenomenon commonly occurs when a hen's ovulation happens too rapidly and their egg production cycles are not completely synchronised. Two egg yolks will mature at the same time and pass through the hen's reproductive system.

Charlotte's egg discovery surpasses Fiona Exon, an art gallery owner from Cumbria, who made headlines in February 2010 for cracking open six double-yolkers.

According to 'yolklore' double-yolked eggs foretell a marriage due to a pregnancy, a death in the family or the birth of twins.
