Belgian Cyclist Dies In Giro D'Italia Crash

Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt has died following a serious crash on the third stage of the Giro d'Italia cycle race.

Doctor Giovanni Trediciat said: "Despite immediate treatment there was nothing we could do."

Paramedics had to cut off the rider's helmet and frantically attempted to resuscitate Weylandt, whose body was lying by the roadside motionless following the crash.

Weylandt, 26, is reported to have come off his bike at high speed during a descent about 12m (20km) from the finish.

An ambulance took the body away about an hour after the accident.

Weylandt's death was the first fatal crash since Italian rider Fabio Casartelli was killed during the 1995 Tour de France.
