Sea monster caught on tape, says Iceland panel

An official panel in Iceland has declared a viral video from 2012 is footage of a mythical sea creature.

According to Slate, the 13-member panel decided by a seven person majority the shaky video was of Lagarfljotsormur, a snake-like creature that has has been the subject of tall tales dating back to the 14th century.

This ruling contradicts Finnish researcher Miisa McKeown who earlier this year concluded the "creature" was actually an iced-up fishing net.

"The movement was the most fascinating aspect, but when I realized how quickly the water was flowing I figured that could very well cause that effect on a flexible object trapped there," she said.

The decision by the panel is believed to be a publicity stunt designed to attract "cryptotourists", people searching for legendary creatures like the Loch Ness Monster of Big Foot.
