Oklahoma likely headed to the BCS after another dramatic win
Oklahoma's road to a probable BCS berth couldn't have been more stressful.
Last week, the Sooners scored a late touchdown to get into overtime against Oklahoma State, then won in the extra period. Then Oklahoma had to worry about Kent State, which snuck up the BCS standings and were probably a win away from getting in the top 16 and snagging Oklahoma's BCS spot. Kent State lost in double overtime on Friday night in the MAC Championship Game.
That cleared the way for Oklahoma, but the Sooners made sure there was drama on Saturday.
The Sooners missed a late field goal against TCU - in the crazy wind, the kick went from looking like it would go wide right to turning about 90 degrees and missing wide left. That gave TCU the ball, down 24-17 with a chance to at least tie.
And the Horned Frogs did look like they tied the game, when quarterback Trevone Boykin scored on a touchdown run with 38 seconds left. But wait ... flag on the play. Holding on TCU (and for the conspiracy theorists, the call was the right one), which pushed the Horned Frogs back to 3rd down and 20. And even that wasn't totally safe for the Sooners. On fourth down Boykin threw a great ball to Josh Boyce in the end zone, and the ball went through Boyce's hands and fell incomplete.
Finally, the Sooners had won a share of the Big 12 title and a likely spot in the BCS. And their fans might need some CPR.
Oklahoma isn't guaranteed a spot in the BCS at the moment - it would get the automatic berth if Kansas State loses tonight - but a Sooners at-large berth makes the most sense given how the rest of the bowls will shake out. The Sugar Bowl seems to be the most likely landing spot.
Whatever bowl Oklahoma ends up in, the Sooners will make it interesting.
