When David Beckham announced his departure from the LA Galaxy, the A-League was already a rumored destination for him. With the Australian league signing international superstars like Alessandro Del Piero and Emile "I can do things" Heskey and Beckham saying he "wanted to experience one last challenge before the end of my playing career" it seemed like a natural fit upon leaving MLS. But the dreams of the five A-League clubs who confirmed interest in the 37-year-old died when Perth Glory owner Tony Sage cornered Beckham at a performance of the new Spice Girls musical in London.
From the FFA's website:
"I got the chance to chat to David, and of course I asked him about coming to Australia," Sage told footballaustralia.com.au.
"He looked me in the eye and basically said, 'That would be nice, but it's too far away from my businesses'. It would have been great to have him at Perth Glory, but it looks like that won't be happening. I just don't think he'll be coming to Australia, full stop."
Since MLS is out and Australia is too far away, I suppose that leaves Europe as Beckham's preferred destination. But getting rejected at a Spice Girls musical has to be especially difficult for Australia.
