New Mexico’s Kendall Williams sparks weekend’s most unlikely comeback
New Mexico appeared headed for a frustrating loss Sunday night when guard Kendall Williams sparked easily the most improbable comeback of the college basketball weekend.
With the Lobos trailing George Mason by five late in Sunday night's matchup at the Paradise Jam, Williams dribbled up court, pulled up 30 feet from the rim and buried an impossibly long 3-pointer with 11.9 seconds left. Williams then cleanly stole the inbound pass, setting up a Tony Snell 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds to go that gave New Mexico an improbable 70-69 win.
It will take more than Williams and Snell for New Mexico to contend in the Mountain West and return to the NCAA tournament this year, but right now those two are carrying the Lobos.
Snell finished with 27 points on a mere 12 shots, a much more efficient night than he had six days earlier when he scored 25 points in a narrow win against Davidson. Williams had 14 points and four assists on Sunday after lighting up Illinois-Chicago for 23 points two nights earlier.
For George Mason, the stunning loss was bittersweet. The Patriots showed potential in their first game since getting big man Erik Copes and guard Vaughn Gray back from suspension, but they wasted Sherrod Wright's 22 points because they could not close out the win.
