Lauren Conrad confronts her haters: ‘It is impossible to please everybody’

Sigh. "The Hills" was such a prolific show that even two years after it ended, former star Lauren Conrad is still talking about it! Who knew that when we were watching LC and Heidi argue over the villainous Spencer, or one of Audrina's monosyllabic conversations with Justin Bobby, that we were actually watching TV history?! This time, 26-year-old Conrad is dishing about the show in a new interview with Allure magazine, explaining that her former "reality" show, which apparently staged many scenes and completely invented storylines (particularly in its later seasons), gets a bad rap. "I think the story they told wasn't a dishonest one," she asserts. "The way they did it sometimes was. [The cameras] aren't going to be there for everything. Sometimes two of their main characters will get into a fight, and that's important to the storyline. The [producers] need that reenacted. Their thing was always: It did happen. They're not making this up: you just didn't see it."

And she says that while some of the romances were fake, such as Kristin Cavallari's relationship with Justin Bobby, LC really did have a thing for dark haired-hottie Brody Jenner. "Brody and I did date," she says, adding, "It was pretty brief. There was definitely editing to drag it out."

These days, Conrad's romantically linked to singer-songwriter William Tell, 32, who's also a law student. Nice — he's got a creative side and something to fall back on! While he seems to adore the reality star-turned-author/designer, the same can't be said of everyone. Conrad has learned the hard way that when you're in the spotlight, you're going to have some haters — and they're probably going to say mean things about you on the Internet. "People felt that a lot of the things I had were undeserved, maybe because I didn't have a specific talent; I was more of a regular girl and maybe didn't deserve the attention," she says.

She was particularly derided for being more prim than the reality stars we're used to seeing on TV. After all, as far as we know, she's never been arrested or had to be pulled off another woman in a fight! (It was once rumored that she had a sex tape, but Conrad's always denied it. At one point even Pratt said the tape didn't exist, but he's since changed his story.) "I think anyone in the public eye is going to be hated, and a lesson that I needed to learn quickly is that it is impossible to please everybody," Conrad notes. "One person will call you classy, and another will call you boring."
