Texas A&M begins its Heisman publicity push for Johnny Manziel

Somewhere along the line, schools promoting players for the Heisman Trophy became important in the voting process. It seems dumb that brochures, billboards or football cards mailed to voters (like Baylor did with Robert Griffin III throughout last season) should make any impact whatsoever -- voters should probably be able to make decisions based on watching games and analyzing pertinent stats, don't you think? -- but that's part of the Heisman game now.

Texas A&M has a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender in Johnny Manziel, so it has decided to play the promotion game too.

The Aggies launched a website (http://heisman.aggieathletics.com) and posted a Youtube video Friday ("The Amazing Johnny Football") to push the freshman quarterback for the Heisman Trophy.

The site points out Manziel's various records (first player in FBS history to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in a game three times, for example) and accomplishments. There are tabs with photos, additional videos and a feature story on Manziel.

Manziel's Heisman campaign is a bit unusual because he is not allowed to speak to the media. Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin has a policy that freshmen aren't allowed to do interviews. That has probably limited Manziel's exposure on a national level and that might cost him votes.

Perhaps the flashy website and highlight video helps solve that exposure issue for Manziel.
