FedExCup profiles: Running down Nos. 15-11 at the Tour Championship
The Tour Championship is here, and 30 players still have a shot (mathematically, anyway) at one of sports' richest single prizes. In the run-up to the tournament, we'll run down each of the players. For each player to win the FedExCup, multiple other players have to finish below certain levels; we didn't run down all those possibilities, just the most notable ones. We continue with two recent major winners and last year's PGA Tour Player or the Year.
15. Luke Donald: Donald had the unenviable task of trying to follow up one of the most impressive season we've see in quite some time, after he won twice, nailed down the European and PGA Tour money list tiles, and finished off 2011 with PGA Tour Player of the Year honors. The Englishman didn't replicate the feat, but he managed to do an admirable job, winning the Transitions Championship and posting seven top-10 finishes. He's finished third in the FedExCup over the last two years, so the only way to best that number would be with a win at East Lake and a 9-way tie for 6th or worse from Rory McIlroy. Good luck with that scenario, Luke.
14. Keegan Bradley: The 2011 PGA Championship winner backed up his dream season with another stellar showing this year. He picked up a win prior to the final major of the year at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and then followed it up with a T-3 at the PGA Championship. Bradley needs a 9th or worse from McIlroy, and a win at the Tour Championship, to capture the FedExCup.
13. Steve Stricker: Ho-hum, another solid season from Steve Stricker, who won the season-opening, winners-only Hyundai Tournament of Champions event, and then posted 10 top 25 finishes over his next 17 starts. Stricker needs a win and an eight-place finish or worse from McIlroy to take home the FedExCup trophy.
12. Sergio Garcia: The Spaniard had a resurgence of sorts on the PGA Tour, when he won Wyndham Championship, the final event of the regular season, and then nailed down a T-3 at the Barclays. Garcia, who's still without a permanent caddie, is playing as well as anyone in the game at the moment. His highest FedExCup finish is a T-3 at the 2008 edition, so he'll need a strong week to move up at least 10 spots. A win at East Lake and a seventh or worse from McIlroy would see him take home the FedExCup title.
11. Bubba Watson: The Masters winner is currently enjoying the best season of his career. He won at Augusta and then posted six top-20 finishes in his next 10 starts. With the exception of three missed cuts this season, Watson hasn't finished outside the top 25 in his other 15 starts, an impressive feat that would lead you to believe he's become more than just a sideshow on the PGA Tour.
