Five storylines from the third round of the U.S. Women’s Open

We'll be keeping an eye on the U.S. Women's Open over the next four days, so in an effort to keep you up-to-date with everything that's going on at Blackwolf Run, we're going to provide you with the top five storylines from each round. Here's a look at Day 3.

Na Yeon Choi blows away the field It's rare that you see a golfer bring a U.S. Open course to its knees -- Rory McIlroy did it last year at Congressional -- but Na Yeon Choi did just that on Saturday, firing an incredibly impressive 7-under 65 on a day when most of the field struggled to break par. With the winds picking up, Blackwolf Run's green started to firm up, turning the round into a battle for survival. For some reason, Choi never got the memo, going 7-under over her first 12 holes to take a commanding six-shot lead going into the final round. Playing from way out front at a major championship can be difficult, but the way Choi's playing at the moment, it would take a Dustin Johnson-esque implosion for her to give away the tournament.

Michelle Wie stumbles out of the gate — After opening her third round with two three-putts, it appeared as if Michelle Wie was on the verge of complete meltdown. While the meltdown never happened, the bogey-bogey start set the tone for a tough round for Wie, who never seemed to find her game after needing just 23 putts to fire a 6-under 66 on Friday. Her 6-over 78 has her ten shots back of Choi going into the final round.

Lexi Thompson hangs tough — Nine shots off the lead, Lexi Thompson likely won't become the youngest major champion in golf on Sunday. But she still deserves credit for producing a solid even par 72 on Saturday. Despite a double-bogey on the third hole, the 17-year-old picked herself up and birdied the 7th hole and the 8th to keep the round together.

Suzann Pettersen falls out of contention — Maybe Pettersen would have been better off sleeping late and nearly missing her tee time. One day after the Norwegian woke up late and rattled off four birdies in her first seven holes, she never got anything going on Saturday, closing with four bogeys in her final six holes to finish the day with an unimpressive 6-over 78.

Day 3 notes — How difficult was Blackwolf Run playing on Saturday? Only four players in the field managed to break par. ... Paula Creamer was one of four players to post red figures with a 1-under 71.
