AP gaffe gives UCLA a stunning upset victory over Oregon
The college football season isn't slated to begin for another couple days, but that didn't stop the Associated Press from playing prognosticator.
The AP accidentally — we believe accidentally — published a dummy headline that read: "Bruins stun Oregon 21-20" and had a dummy paragraph below it complete with dateline.
PASADENA, Calif. - Bob Jones threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 10 seconds left, as UCLA stunned Oregon 21-20 on Saturday night.
Bob Jones wasn't highly recruited out of high school, but he sure has made the most of his opportunities.
It would have been all well and good had the AP's college football trial run stayed in-house, but someone pushed the send button and blasted every media outlet in the country with its bogus headline. Some of those outlets ended up running the story, including the New York Times and Washington Post.
If you type "Bruins stun Oregon" into a search engine, it turns up more than 100,000 results from outlets from Miami to Hawaii to Ventura, Calif.
See, everyone is in preseason form.
Unfortunately, UCLA and Oregon don't play this season, so Jim Mora Jr. will probably have a difficult time using this gaffe as a recruiting tool.
